Who runs this site

Riddle Forest is a personal blog run by one person. For anything about your data, write to mr.riddle.forest@gmail.com.

What is stored

  • The __session cookie, set on every page view. It holds the security token that protects the forms and remembers your like or dislike on each article. It is strictly necessary, lasts two weeks and is never used to track you.
  • The cc_cookie cookie, which remembers your cookie choice for six months.
  • Comments you post: the name and the text you enter. Both are shown publicly under the article.
  • Server request logs, kept by Google Cloud: your IP address, your browser's user agent, the page requested and the time.

Analytics

Google Analytics 4 runs only if you choose "Accept analytics". Until then nothing is loaded from Google Analytics and none of its cookies are set. If you accept, it sets _ga and _ga_<id> to count page views and visits, and I see only the totals.

You can change your mind at any time: open "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page and turn analytics off. The page reloads and the analytics cookies are deleted.

Third parties your browser contacts

Every page loads files from these services, which therefore see your IP address and browser details:

  • Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com): the typefaces.
  • jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net): a stylesheet and a small script.
  • unpkg (unpkg.com): the icons.
  • cdnjs (cdnjs.cloudflare.com): code highlighting.
  • jQuery (code.jquery.com): a script library.
  • Google Cloud Storage (storage.googleapis.com): the site's stylesheets, scripts and images.
  • Firebase Hosting (Google): serves riddleforest.com itself.

The tool pages also load the D3 charting library from jsDelivr.

Your rights

You can ask to see the data held about you, or to have it erased, for example a comment you posted. Write to mr.riddle.forest@gmail.com. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
